Circumstances when information may be withheld

In medical practice, there are occasions when it is prudent to withhold certain information.

Health Professionals will be justified in withholding information under following circumstances

•    When doctor is not sure about diagnosis. Such situation takes place about laboratory findings of Fine-Needle-Aspiration cytology or histopathology reports in a suspected case of malignancy.
•    If information is likely to have an adverse effect on the physical or mental health of the patient. It would be advisable to take patient's relatives, friends into confidence and communicate at an appropriate time.
•    The news about the serious condition or demise of a VIP patient is withheld temporarily on political grounds to enable the authorities to make adequate arrangements to maintain law and order.
•    When the patient has expressed his desire to withhold some information from his relatives/ friends.
