Industrial Dispute Act, 1947
Introduction
This is a central Act. It is of great importance. It has the prime object of maintaining industrial peace and hence it provides for the investigation and settlement of disputes. The Act also intends to improve the service conditions of the workers.
Industry
"Industry" means any business, trade, undertaking, manufacture or calling of employers and includes any calling, service, employment, handicraft or industrial occupation or a vocation of workers (Section 2(J).
The Hon. Supreme Court has held in Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board V/s A Rajappa and others (AIR 1978 Sc 548) that the Hospital is an industry.
